This yeasted poppy seed cake was inspired by a cake my mom bought at a bakery. I never knew I liked this cake until I tasted it. Store bought poppy seed filling makes this cake a lot simpler to prepare. The filling keeps for a long time so stock up and you can bake this cake any time you like.
This cake is a nod to my Hungarian heritage. Its origins are from eastern Europe and there are many different variations. The recipe below is mine. You can purchase poppy seed filling at any well stocked grocery store or here.
Yeasted Poppy Seed Cake
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp yeast
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 cup water plus 2 tbsp water
- ¼ cup sugar
- ¼ cup oil
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 egg plus 2 egg yolks
- 5 cups flour
- 12 oz poppy seed filling
- 1 egg for egg wash
Instructions
- Add water, yeast, 1 tbsp sugar to a bowl.
- Mix well and let sit for 10 minutes.
- Add the eggs and mix well
- Add the rest of the ingredients and mix.
- Knead the dough until it forms a cohesive ball. See picture above
- Add to a bowl and let rise until doubled in size.
- Divide dough into two.
- Roll each piece of dough into 12x20 inch rectangle.
- Spread ½ of the filling on the dough and roll up.
- Add to half baking sheet.
- Repeat with remaining dough.
- Let rise for 45 minute and then brush with egg wash.
- Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees and until top is deep brown
